Ferran Torres extended his remarkable form at Paris Saint-Germain by opening the scoring in a thrilling 2-1 victory over Marseille at the Stade Vélodrome, further cementing his impact since joining the French and European champions.
The Spain international, celebrated for his role in the World Cup final, entered the match just before the hour mark, substituting for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Within minutes, Torres rose to meet a cross from Desire Doue, heading the ball into the net in the 66th minute and igniting the contest.
The game’s intensity surged as Marseille’s England midfielder Angel Gomes responded swiftly, delivering a well-crafted equaliser in the 72nd minute. However, the visitors regained the lead shortly after, thanks to PSG captain Marquinhos. The Brazilian defender connected with a cross from Nuno Mendes, initially seeing his shot saved by goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange, but capitalised on the rebound to score.
Late Drama as Marseille Reduced to Ten Men
Adding to Marseille’s woes, former PSG forward Timothy Weah, representing the home side, received a second yellow card and was sent off, leaving his team a man down for the remainder of the match.
Torres’s contribution continues to impress, having already netted seven goals in six appearances across all competitions since his transfer from Barcelona. Despite featuring mostly as a substitute, with only three starts, his goal-scoring consistency remains a vital asset for PSG.
Following the victory, Torres acknowledged the significance of the fixture: “We knew that for us it was one of the most important matches of the season. We knew it wouldn’t be easy but we managed to get the victory.”
This win lifts PSG to sixth place in the Ligue 1 standings, trailing league leaders Monaco by five points after five rounds of matches, setting the stage for a competitive season ahead.
