Trinity Rodman delivered the decisive moment in Wednesday’s NWSL clash between the Washington Spirit and the Utah Royals, scoring the lone goal that secured a 1-0 victory for the Spirit at America First Field.
After a lengthy weather delay lasting nearly an hour, the game resumed with the Royals having established early dominance, outshooting Washington 5-2 before play was halted. However, this momentum swiftly dissolved when Rodman capitalized on a precise cross from Paige Metayer, tapping in a close-range finish in the 28th minute to break the deadlock.
Rodman’s Goal Shifts Momentum Despite Utah’s Pressure
Even though Utah controlled much of the match, registering 10 shots to Washington’s 4 before halftime and accumulating 34 touches inside the penalty area throughout the game, their efforts failed to translate into goals. The Royals managed only four shots on target during the entire contest, all of which were expertly denied by Spirit goalkeeper Sandy MacIver, who maintained a clean sheet.
Reflecting on the critical moment, Washington’s head coach Jimmy Coenraets noted, “We had two or three very clear chances. We referred to it as a lapse of five seconds against a world-class player,” highlighting the fine margins that decided the outcome.
