Diego Kochen, the Miami-born goalkeeper, has emerged as one of the brightest young talents for the USMNT during the recent international break, showcasing a breakthrough season in Denmark. At just 20 years old, Kochen made history by becoming the youngest goalkeeper to start a match for the United States men’s national team in their 3-0 friendly victory over Mexico, where his composure and skill with the ball at his feet stood out.
As competition intensifies for the national team’s goalkeeping spots, Kochen’s performance has positioned him as a leading candidate to retain his place ahead of the upcoming CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals against Haiti in November.
The Journey to Barcelona
Kochen’s football journey began in Miami, but his path took a significant turn in 2018 when he relocated to Spain with his family at the age of 12. Just a year later, he was recruited by the prestigious FC Barcelona La Masia academy. Prior to that, Kochen had developed his skills with Marcet Football University, an organization known for collaborating with clubs like Barcelona to coordinate youth competitions.
While he has been included in several first-team squads over recent seasons, Kochen is yet to make his official competitive debut for Barcelona’s senior side. His only appearance came in a friendly match against Club América in December 2023. Instead, he has accumulated close to 40 appearances for Barcelona Atlètic, the club’s B team competing in Spain’s third and fourth divisions.
This season marks an important step in Kochen’s professional development as he has embarked on a loan move to a Danish club, gaining valuable senior-level experience which is expected to enhance his readiness for top-tier football.
Looking ahead, Kochen is determined to establish himself alongside fellow promising talents such as Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Raphinha at Barcelona, aiming to leave a lasting impression at one of Europe’s most storied football clubs.
