Aston Villa finally ended their goal drought by securing a 3-2 victory over Club Brugge in their opening match of the Champions League group stage on Tuesday.
After a difficult start to the Premier League season, marked by a lack of goals and limited attacking threat, Unai Emery’s side found relief on the European stage. Villa had failed to score in the first three league games and managed just one shot on target during that period.
Playing under heavy rain at the Jan Breydel Stadium, John McGinn broke the deadlock early, notching Villa’s first goal of the campaign. However, the home team quickly responded through Hugo Vetlesen, leveling the score shortly after.
Emiliano Buendia restored Villa’s advantage, followed by a first goal for the club from Nicolas Jackson just before halftime, putting the visitors firmly in control.
Penalty Drama and a Tight Finish
The second half saw Nicolo Tresoldi convert a penalty for Brugge, setting up a nervy finale. Despite the late pressure, Villa managed to hold on for their first win of the season across all competitions.
This victory offers a much-needed boost for Villa, who can now focus on their upcoming Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest before returning to Champions League action against Fenerbahce in October.
Last season, Villa clinched the Europa League title, ending a 30-year wait for European silverware with a historic win over Freiburg in Istanbul. Nevertheless, the squad that achieved that success has undergone significant changes during the off-season, losing several key players.
