This triumph improved Washington’s record to 19-12, firmly establishing their momentum in the league. The Mystics’ offense was led by standout performances from Shakira Austin and Sonia Citron, each tallying 19 points.
Dominance from Second Quarter Secures Washington’s Victory
After a closely contested first quarter that saw Phoenix take a slight lead at 21-20, Washington seized control from the second quarter onward. The Mystics’ defense stifled the Mercury, holding them to just 35.3% shooting across the second and third quarters combined. By the end of the third quarter, Washington had built a 22-point lead, a margin they maintained throughout the final period to seal a decisive win.
Alongside her scoring, Shakira Austin contributed significantly on the boards, grabbing 11 rebounds. Sonia Citron showcased her efficiency, shooting 7-of-9 from the field and an impressive 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, while also dishing out six assists. Additional offensive support came from Michaela Onyenwere and Cotie McMahon, who each added 13 points, with Kiki Iriafen contributing 12 points and nine rebounds.
For the Mercury, Kahleah Copper led the scoring with 15 points. Meanwhile, Kelsey Plum, a recent acquisition from the LA Sparks, was limited by a left calf injury and did not play in the second half after scoring five points in 14 minutes.
Looking ahead, the Mystics are set to visit Las Vegas on Tuesday, where they will have an opportunity to tie the franchise record of eight consecutive wins, a mark previously established in 2018.
