Mina Kim, an investor in the Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL), has initiated legal action against the league, seeking access to detailed financial records. This development unfolds as the WPBL concludes its inaugural season, less than a month after its official launch.

Kim filed a petition on Monday in the Delaware Court of Chancery, requesting disclosure of 19 distinct categories of financial documents. Central to the dispute is a payment of nearly $60,000 made to a company owned by WPBL CEO Keith Stein and his wife. Initially categorized as a startup expense reimbursement, this payment was later reclassified as a loan receivable. According to Kim’s filing, these transactions occurred without board approval or proper documentation, raising significant concerns about the league’s financial transparency.

Conflict-of-Interest Concerns and Board Dynamics

The lawsuit also highlights potential conflicts of interest within the WPBL’s leadership structure. Stein serves as an attorney at the law firm Dentons, where fellow board member Andreas Kloppenborg is a partner. Additionally, questions have been raised regarding a possible familial relationship between board member Mark Prosterman and Stein’s wife, whose maiden name is Prosterman, further complicating the governance issues at play.

In response to the legal challenge, the WPBL has dismissed Kim’s claims as a “personal grievance.” The league emphasized that the other five board members remain united in rejecting the allegations. Nevertheless, this dispute emerges at a critical juncture for the fledgling league, which is actively seeking to build a fan base and secure sponsorships during its debut season. Such unresolved financial controversies could impede the league’s efforts to gain momentum and trust.

The WPBL’s inaugural season features a four-team regular schedule, marking a significant step forward for professional women’s baseball. However, the ongoing legal battle underscores the challenges faced by new sports organizations navigating governance and financial accountability amid growth ambitions.
