Xbox has officially rolled out a long-anticipated feature allowing players to redeem digital versions of their physical game discs for Xbox One and Xbox Series X. After several months of speculation and testing, gamers can now convert eligible physical games into digital licenses, eliminating the need to keep discs inserted while playing.
This new disc-to-digital licensing system, which has been under trial with Xbox Insider members, activates a digital license as soon as the player inserts a qualifying disc into their console. According to Xbox’s support site, once a digital license is granted, players can access the corresponding digital version of the game without the physical disc present.
Scope and Limitations of the Feature
Despite the promising convenience, the feature comes with important restrictions. Not all game discs for Xbox One or Xbox Series X qualify for digital conversion. Microsoft notes that eligibility is subject to change due to several factors, including technical constraints, licensing agreements, publishing rights, and manufacturing specifics. Notably, games from the original Xbox and Xbox 360 libraries are excluded from this program, meaning backward-compatible titles cannot be converted into digital licenses through this system.
As the feature is still evolving, players are encouraged to check their particular titles for eligibility before attempting the conversion.
