In a striking opening performance at the 2026 China Open, Xinran Sun, just 16 years old, secured her first WTA main-draw victory in Beijing. Sun defeated Eva Lys decisively before the German was forced to retire due to injury, concluding the match in only 43 minutes on Diamond Court on Thursday.
After dropping her initial service game, Sun quickly dominated the encounter, winning nine straight games to take control. Lys, ranked No. 102, struggled with her serve, committing seven double faults before retiring early in the second set with a foot injury, trailing 6-1, 3-0.
Xinran Sun’s Breakthrough on the WTA Tour
Despite being ranked No. 582, Sun displayed remarkable composure and skill well beyond her ranking. The junior world No. 1, who recently captured the US Open junior title, is now among the youngest players to claim a WTA tour-level match. Reflecting on her performance, Sun remarked, “Honestly I feel good on the court. I’m just making my tactic and just following what I need to do.”
Sun’s victory marks a significant milestone as she transitions from junior success to the professional circuit, signaling her potential to make an impact on the WTA tour in the seasons ahead.
Teenage Talent Shines Across the China Open
The tournament also highlighted another promising Chinese teenager, Qu Yihan, aged 17, who pushed world No. 116 Harriet Dart to a grueling three-set match. Qu narrowly lost 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-5 in one of the longest encounters of the Asian swing, lasting three hours.
Both Sun and Qu received wildcards into the main draw, reflecting the growing emphasis on nurturing young Chinese talent at the China Open. Their performances underscore a new generation eager to make their mark on the professional tennis scene.
