Ann Li delivered a remarkable upset at the 2026 Wuhan Open, toppling the tournament’s top seed, Aryna Sabalenka, during their second-round encounter on Wednesday. The American player emerged victorious in a tightly contested three-set match, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5), showcasing resilience and determination against the formidable four-time Grand Slam champion.

Despite losing the opening set, Li, aged 26, mounted a strong comeback. Trailing 4-2 in the second set, she rallied to win four consecutive games, leveling the score and shifting the momentum in her favor. The final set proved to be a nail-biter, with Li taking a 5-2 lead before Sabalenka resisted fiercely, saving nine match points over the next three games and forcing a tiebreak.

Ten Match Points Tested Before Li Seals the Victory

In the decisive tiebreak, Li’s persistence paid off as she finally converted her tenth match point to clinch the win. Reflecting on the intense finish, Li admitted, “I was about to crash out. I didn’t play bad. She just played really well. So you have to play point by point. And I knew that if I stayed there, I could get into that situation again, which is all you can ask for.”

This triumph marked Li’s first victory over Sabalenka in their four career meetings and her third win against a top 10 opponent overall. For Sabalenka, the defeat prolonged a challenging period without silverware, extending her trophy drought to seven months and underscoring the difficulties she has faced recently on tour.
