Following the death of a Social Security-insured worker in the United States, the Social Security Administration (SSA) provides a one-time payment of $255 to eligible survivors. This lump-sum death benefit is distinct from the SSA’s ongoing monthly survivor benefits, and recipients may qualify to receive both.

Priority for this payment is given to the deceased worker’s surviving spouse. To qualify, the spouse must have been living with the worker at the time of death or, if living separately, must have been receiving spousal benefits based on the worker’s record or be eligible for survivor benefits after the worker’s passing.

Eligibility معايير for Survivors

If no surviving spouse meets the eligibility requirements, the lump-sum death benefit may be awarded to the worker’s children. These children must either be receiving family benefits based on the deceased’s employment history or be eligible for survivor benefits. To qualify, the children must fall into one of the following الفئات: be under 18 years old, aged 18 to 19 and enrolled full-time in K-12 education, or be of any age if they developed a disability before turning 22.

In cases where multiple children are eligible, the $255 payment is divided equally among them.
