From Iran to International Acclaim

Born in Iran in 1969, Marjane Satrapi grew up in a progressive family that initially supported the 1979 Iranian Revolution. However, as the revolution shifted towards Islamist policies—imposing strict social restrictions, repression, and compulsory veiling—her family became increasingly alienated from the regime. The outbreak of war between Iran and Iraq further solidified the regime’s hardline stance, prompting her parents to send her abroad to continue her education at a French lycée in Vienna.

Later in life, Satrapi was introduced to the world of comics by French author David B. (David Beauchard), who played a pivotal role in encouraging her artistic pursuits. This encounter marked the beginning of her journey into graphic storytelling, through which she would eventually transform her personal experiences into a culturally significant and politically charged narrative.
