Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White publicly defended forward Alyssa Thomas in the wake of escalating online harassment following a controversial play during a recent WNBA game. The incident, which occurred on June 24th at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, involved Thomas making contact with Caitlin Clark’s throat, leading to Thomas receiving a one-game suspension.
Initially, White described the foul as “egregious” and a “cheap shot,” expressing clear disapproval of the action on the court. However, her stance evolved as the response from fans grew increasingly hostile and violent, prompting her to speak out against the abusive behavior directed at Thomas.

Following the suspension, Thomas disclosed that she had been subjected to death threats and racial abuse online, a revelation that added a troubling dimension to the incident. She also criticized WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert for the league’s delayed reaction to addressing player safety concerns raised by the episode. White, who previously coached Thomas for two seasons with the Connecticut Sun, voiced her agreement with the frustration over the slow league response.
“It is absolutely unacceptable,” White stated to reporters, emphasizing that much of the harmful behavior originated from the online community.
