Atletico Madrid officially confirmed the acquisition of Morten Hjulmand, the Danish international defensive midfielder, from Sporting Lisbon on Saturday. The 27-year-old has committed to the Spanish club with a contract extending through 2031.

Recognized for his physical prowess, exceptional ball-winning skills, and astute game intelligence, Hjulmand was highly praised in an official club statement. His defensive capabilities and tactical awareness are expected to bolster Atletico’s midfield as they prepare for upcoming challenges.

Hjulmand’s international experience includes 27 appearances for the Denmark national team, during which he has scored once. His career path has seen him develop across several leagues, starting in his native Denmark and Austria before moving to Italy.

From Serie A to La Liga: A Steady Rise

In 2021, Hjulmand joined Lecce in Serie A, where, at just 23 years old, he became the second-youngest captain in the league’s history, second only to Francesco Totti of Roma. His leadership qualities and consistent performances caught the attention of Sporting Lisbon, where he transferred next.

During three successful seasons with Sporting, Hjulmand contributed to the club securing two Primeira Liga titles along with a Portuguese Cup victory, adding significant silverware to his resume. His tenure in Lisbon solidified his reputation as a key midfield presence.

This summer transfer window, Atletico Madrid has actively strengthened their squad. Alongside Hjulmand, they have signed Spanish international left-back Alejandro Grimaldo from Bayer Leverkusen. Furthermore, the team is on the verge of acquiring South Korean forward Lee Kang-in from reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain.
