Valentin Barco has become the seventh signing for Chelsea during this summer’s transfer window, completing a seven-year contract after moving from their sister club Strasbourg. This transfer marks the 13th transaction between the two clubs since last season, reflecting their shared ownership and close collaboration in player development.
Barco is the second player this window to make the move from Ligue 1’s Strasbourg to Chelsea, following the earlier acquisition of Emmanuel Emegha. The 22-year-old Argentine was a member of the national squad that reached the final of the recent World Cup, where he notably clashed with England’s Jude Bellingham during the semi-final over celebrations.
Versatile in his playstyle, Barco is capable of performing both as a left-back and in midfield roles. His Premier League experience includes a short stint with Brighton three seasons ago. Initially joining Strasbourg on loan from Brighton in 2024, Barco secured a permanent move a year later after contributing to Strasbourg’s qualification for the Conference League.
Chelsea’s Summer Rebuild Gains Momentum
Barco’s signing is part of an active summer for Chelsea as they pursue a squad rebuild under the guidance of new manager Xabi Alonso. The club recently confirmed the addition of veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton, strengthening their attacking options. This follows the acquisitions of Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace and Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.
