Fredrik Sjovold’s decisive goal in the 52nd minute propelled Bodo/Glimt to a 1-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, continuing the Norwegian club’s impressive home dominance in the Champions League. The win highlights Bodo’s ability to challenge Europe’s elite on their own turf.

Despite Dortmund’s status as the 2024 Champions League runners-up, they were unable to overcome the hosts, who seized control shortly after halftime through Sjovold’s strike. Dortmund made noticeable efforts to rally during the final 30 minutes, including a late opportunity for Felix Nmecha, yet failed to find an equalizer.

Reflecting on the defeat, Dortmund’s coach Niko Kovac admitted the team fell short in terms of passion and intensity. Speaking to DAZN, Kovac stated, “There’s nothing we can complain about, we deserved to lose. We didn’t bring enough passion today — that’s something Bodo did much better. They took the lead and after that we woke up, but by then it was too late.”

Small Stadium, Big Upsets

Bodo’s Aspmyra Stadium, with a capacity of just 8,200 and the smallest venue in this season’s competition, has become a fortress for the club. This victory adds Dortmund to the list of high-profile teams defeated on this artificial turf, joining the likes of Manchester City, Inter Milan, and Sporting.

Waldemar Anton, Dortmund’s captain, acknowledged the team’s shortcomings after the match. “Each of us needs to ask ourselves what the problem was. In several areas we were missing our intensity today and without this intensity you won’t win a game,” he commented.

Arriving in the Arctic Circle on the back of a seven-game unbeaten streak, Dortmund struggled to establish a foothold in the match. In contrast, Bodo appeared comfortable and confident during the opening half, showcasing the resilience that helped them reach the round of 16 last season.

This result further cements Bodo/Glimt’s reputation as giant-killers, capable of toppling some of Europe’s most prestigious clubs on their home ground. Their continued success at Aspmyra underscores their unique challenge to established powers in the Champions League.
