Brentford has secured the signature of Malian midfielder Mamadou Sangare from Lens in what stands as the club’s record transfer, reportedly valued at £39 million ($52 million).
The 24-year-old midfielder has committed to a five-year contract with an option for an additional year, marking a significant investment by the Premier League side.
Sangare’s recent performances were instrumental in Lens achieving a second-place finish in Ligue 1, as well as capturing the Coupe de France last season. Before his move to France, he joined Lens from Rapid Vienna and featured in 29 league games during the previous campaign.
Filling a Key Midfield Role
Brentford’s manager, Keith Andrews, emphasized Sangare’s alignment with the club’s values both on and off the field, predicting that the midfielder will quickly become a fan favorite. Andrews highlighted Sangare’s progression following multiple loan spells and his consistent high-level displays for Lens throughout a successful season.
Moreover, Sangare has established himself as an important figure for the Malian national team, earning 16 caps and solidifying his role in midfield. His arrival is timely, as Brentford’s England international Jordan Henderson is poised to depart for Chelsea, leaving a vacancy that Sangare is expected to fill.
This acquisition not only strengthens Brentford’s midfield options but also reflects the club’s ambition to compete at higher levels in the Premier League following Sangare’s proven track record in European football.
