Chelsea have publicly addressed the abrupt resignation of their former coach Enzo Maresca, who stepped down on 1 January 2026. The club revealed that Maresca had informed them during autumn 2025 of his intention to succeed Pep Guardiola as Manchester City’s head coach. Following his departure, confidential agreements including compensation arrangements were finalized between Chelsea, Manchester City, and Maresca.

Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Chelsea have expressed confidence in Xabi Alonso as their new manager. Meanwhile, transfer activity is gaining momentum with notable developments reported on several fronts.

Transfer Progress and Sponsorship Talks

Sources indicate that Chelsea are advancing negotiations for Maxence Lacroix, a defender from Crystal Palace, with a reported agreement on a £46 million fee. Lacroix is expected to join Levi Colwill in the defensive lineup, aiming to strengthen the team’s ability to defend against crosses and set pieces.

Additionally, Chelsea have reportedly agreed to a £43 million deal for midfielder Marco Palestra. The club is anticipated to finance these acquisitions partly through incoming funds from player sales and the compensation linked to Maresca’s exit.

In comments from Inter Milan’s director Piero Ausilio, it was disclosed that the Italian club attempted to acquire Palestra but were outbid by Chelsea’s more lucrative offer in terms of wages and transfer fee. Ausilio also expressed regret over missing out on signing Sandro Tonali earlier in his career.

On another transfer front, Chelsea continue their pursuit of Sunderland’s midfielder Granit Xhaka, despite the club’s reluctance to sell the player, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

In parallel with transfer dealings, Chelsea have adjusted their financial expectations for their front-of-shirt sponsorship deal, reducing the asking price to a range of £45 million to £50 million. Discussions with potential sponsors remain ongoing.

The club’s handling of Maresca’s resignation has sparked debate, with some commentators criticizing Chelsea’s public condemnation of the coach as hypocritical, citing the club’s past treatment of managers.
