Chelsea have secured the signing of Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta, confirming a seven-year contract on Wednesday. Although the official transfer fee remains undisclosed, British media outlets report the deal is valued at approximately £43 million ($57 million), potentially rising to £47 million with performance-related add-ons.

Coming off a challenging season that saw Chelsea finish tenth in the Premier League, the club is intent on revitalizing its squad under the leadership of new manager Xabi Alonso. Palestra stands as Alonso’s inaugural signing since his official arrival at Stamford Bridge, marking a significant step in the club’s rebuilding process.

Prior to Chelsea’s intervention, reports from Italy indicated that Palestra was poised to join Inter Milan. However, the London club reportedly outbid their Serie A rivals, securing the defender’s commitment.

Promising Talent Joins Chelsea’s Defensive Ranks

At just 21 years old, Palestra arrives with a growing reputation, having been named Serie A Defender of the Year for the 2025/26 season. Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, the defender expressed enthusiasm about his move: “A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world. I’m very excited to get started. I’ve felt the energy since the first day Chelsea wanted me. I can’t wait to start, see all the fans, my team-mates and the manager.”

He further highlighted the strength of the squad and the vision laid out by Alonso, saying, “We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi. He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can’t wait to compete in the Premier League.”

Palestra’s recent campaign on loan at Cagliari showcased his versatility, as he featured effectively both as a full-back and wing-back. Additionally, he earned his first international caps during Italy’s unsuccessful World Cup qualifying play-offs, marking his emergence on the international stage.
