Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been officially cleared to return to professional football following the resolution of his doping ban appeal by the Football Association (FA) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
The Ukrainian international was originally handed a four-year suspension after testing positive for a low concentration of meldonium, a banned substance, in a 2024 drug test. However, subsequent changes in WADA’s testing protocols have altered the interpretation of such cases.
According to the FA, had Mudryk’s sample been analyzed under the current regulations, the concentration detected would not have triggered an anti-doping violation. “Changes have been made, which, while not retroactive, mean that if Mr Mudryk’s sample was collected today, the concentration of meldonium in the sample would not have been reported and no anti-doping rule violations would have resulted,” the governing body explained.
Appeal Leads to Immediate Reinstatement
Following these procedural updates, Mudryk appealed the ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The FA and WADA subsequently reached an agreement to resolve the appeal, acknowledging the new circumstances surrounding his case. As part of the settlement, Mudryk admitted to the anti-doping rule violations but accepted a period of ineligibility corresponding to the time he had already served.
This agreement means that Mudryk is no longer barred from participating in competitive matches and can resume playing immediately. The forward has not appeared in a game since November 2024 due to the suspension.
With his reinstatement confirmed, Chelsea can now call upon the services of their winger once again as they continue their campaign.
