Chicago Fire have officially secured the services of Robert Lewandowski, the captain of Poland, on a contract extending through the 2027-28 Major League Soccer season. This marquee signing marks a significant addition to the MLS club’s roster.
At 37 years old, Lewandowski arrives from Barcelona, where he played a pivotal role in securing the La Liga title during the previous campaign. His transfer to Chicago Fire brings one of the most outstanding goal-scoring resumes in contemporary football to the league.
Throughout his illustrious career, Lewandowski has amassed over 700 goals across club and international competitions. His journey has included notable tenures at Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and most recently, Barcelona. His goal-scoring prowess has been a defining element of each stage of his career.
Raising Ambitions in Chicago
Fire’s head coach and director of football, Gregg Berhalter, emphasized the importance of this acquisition, stating that the club’s vision is to build a world-class team that not only inspires greatness but also unites the city and competes for major honors.
Berhalter highlighted Lewandowski as embodying the values the club strives for—a champion and competitor who can elevate the team’s standards. “His arrival reinforces our ambition to compete for trophies and raises the standards for the club to heights worthy of this city,” he said.
Currently, Chicago Fire sits third in the MLS Eastern Conference, having collected 26 points in their first 14 matches of the season. Lewandowski’s addition is expected to bolster their push as the league moves into its second half.
Lewandowski closes the chapter on his European career as one of football’s most decorated forwards. His accolades include a UEFA Champions League title, 10 Bundesliga championships, three La Liga titles, and two consecutive Best FIFA Men’s Player awards in 2020 and 2021.
During his time at Bayern Munich alone, he scored an astonishing 238 goals in 253 appearances, demonstrating his consistent elite-level performance before moving on to Barcelona.
