The BBC has officially opened the search for a new production team to take the reins of Doctor Who, aiming to bring fresh episodes to audiences between 2028 and 2029. This announcement comes after the conclusion of the show’s latest run, marking a significant turning point for the long-running sci-fi series.

Production companies interested in reviving the iconic franchise are invited to submit their proposals by October 1. These initial bids must include a concise three-page pitch that outlines their editorial vision for the future of the show, setting the stage for a competitive selection process.

New Era on the Horizon with Regional Production Focus

The forthcoming contract is designed to cover a single season comprising multiple episodes, alongside the traditional special episodes that have become a hallmark of the series. There is also the possibility of extending this contract into a second year, depending on the production team’s success and the BBC’s strategic plans.

In line with Ofcom’s regional production requirements, the BBC has emphasized the importance of maintaining a substantial production presence within the United Kingdom, specifically outside of Greater London. Wales has been highlighted as the preferred production base, continuing its legacy as the home for much of the modern era of Doctor Who.

Following the submission of initial pitches, a shortlist of candidates will be selected to proceed to the next stage of evaluation. The BBC expects to finalize its decision and announce the new production team by March 2027, giving ample time to prepare for the series’ anticipated return.
