Netflix has unveiled plans for Ravenloft, a new live-action series rooted in the gothic horror realm of Dungeons & Dragons. The show will be executive produced by Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuarón, with John August taking on the roles of creator and writer.
Distinct from the traditional high-fantasy landscapes synonymous with The Forgotten Realms, this adaptation delves into darker themes such as supernatural forces, horror, and tragedy. The announcement also revealed that Netflix’s previously announced Dungeons & Dragons series set in The Forgotten Realms has been cancelled in favor of this new direction.
Exploring the Origins of Strahd von Zarovich
According to Variety, the Ravenloft series is envisioned as a “prestige fantasy series where adventure collides with gothic horror and tragic romance.” The narrative centers on the creation of the vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovich, whose journey from a tragic antihero to one of the most infamous villains in Dungeons & Dragons history is marked by themes of power, obsession, love, and undead transformation.
This character and the setting originate from the Ravenloft campaign setting, crafted by Tracy and Laura Hickman and first introduced in 1983. The series promises to redefine adventure by focusing on character-driven stories embedded in dark magic and supernatural intrigue, offering a fresh take on a classic narrative within the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
