Electronic Arts has revealed plans to cut roughly 400 jobs and shut down the iconic studio BioWare, the creative force behind celebrated game franchises such as Mass Effect, Neverwinter Nights, Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. This significant move impacts about 3% of EA’s global workforce, including nearly 50 positions specifically at BioWare.

The decision arrives in the wake of EA’s transformation into a privately held company, led by an international investment group spearheaded by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, which now owns 93.4% of the firm following a $55 billion acquisition finalized on August 4. The transition has saddled EA with $18 billion in debt, a financial burden that appears to have driven these workforce reductions and the shuttering of a studio renowned for its contributions to the gaming industry.

Project Priorities Shift Amid Restructuring

Alongside the closure and layoffs, EA has also made strategic adjustments to its project lineup. The development of a new Sims title, referred to internally as “Project Lotus,” has been deprioritized in favor of focusing resources on another initiative known as “Project Evergreen.” Meanwhile, the company confirmed it will persist with the development of the game Skate, although the team dedicated to this project will be scaled down.

These changes mark a pivotal moment for EA and its fans, as the company restructures its operations and refines its development priorities under its new ownership. The closure of BioWare, a studio that has left an indelible mark on gaming with its storytelling and immersive role-playing experiences, signals a significant shift in the landscape of the industry.
