In a collaborative effort to safeguard the fitness of defender Naomi Girma, USWNT coach Emma Hayes and US Soccer are coordinating closely with Chelsea following the player’s latest setback with a recurring calf injury. This latest issue has forced Girma to miss the current USWNT camp, intensifying concerns about her availability for both club and country.

Since her record-breaking transfer to Chelsea in early 2025, valued at $1 million, Girma’s playing time has been limited by this persistent injury. She has managed only 21 appearances for the Blues and has taken the field eight times for the USWNT, highlighting ongoing struggles to maintain consistent fitness.

Emma Hayes acknowledged the frequency of the injury problems, emphasizing the need for a strategic change. “This has happened too often,” Hayes stated. “If we want her to be in a position to play games on a regular basis for club and country, I think we have to change some things.”

Looking Ahead to the 2027 World Cup

With the 2027 World Cup approaching, the timing of Girma’s condition raises stakes considerably. The USWNT is set to begin its two-match friendly series against reigning champions Spain this Saturday, a crucial phase for squad preparation ahead of the tournament. Ensuring Girma’s full recovery and long-term fitness remains a priority as the team navigates this competitive period.
