Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been named the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year for the 2025/26 season. Meanwhile, Manchester City‘s Khadija Shaw claimed the women’s award for the second time, highlighting another remarkable campaign.
Fernandes, a key figure for Portugal and United, smashed the Premier League record for most assists in a single season by providing 21 assists, surpassing the previous benchmark held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. Alongside his creative contributions, the 31-year-old also found the net nine times.
His efforts were instrumental in Manchester United‘s turnaround after a sluggish start to the season, ultimately securing a third-place finish in the Premier League under the guidance of interim manager Michael Carrick. This position ensured the club’s return to the Champions League.
In addition to the PFA accolade, Fernandes had earlier been recognized with the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award in May, further underscoring his exceptional form.
Reflecting on the honor, Fernandes remarked on the significance of being voted for by fellow professionals: “It is obviously a very proud moment. They are the ones you go on the pitch against and it’s probably not easy to vote for someone you play against, so it is a very good moment.”
Dominance on Both Sides of the City Rivalry
On the women’s side, Khadija Shaw secured her third consecutive Golden Boot by netting 21 goals, playing a pivotal role in Manchester City‘s first Women’s Super League title in ten years. Her consistent scoring prowess helped City reclaim domestic glory after a decade-long wait.
City’s success extended beyond Shaw’s achievements, as Nico O’Reilly was honored with the men’s Young Player of the Year award. The 21-year-old contributed two goals in the League Cup final, helping City defeat Arsenal, and was part of the squad that lifted the FA Cup last season.
O’Reilly expressed pride in his breakthrough season, acknowledging the importance of his contributions to City’s trophy haul.
