José Mourinho‘s recent appointment at Real Madrid has already begun influencing the club’s defensive recruitment strategy. Following the acquisition of Ibrahima Konaté, the Portugais manager is reportedly interested in securing the services of another central defender, with Nico Schlotterbeck emerging as a notable candidate.
The German international, currently with Borussia Dortmund, extended his contract last April until 2031. However, according to a report by Bild titled “Alert over Mourinho at BVB,” Schlotterbeck’s contract contains a release clause valued between €50–60 million, applicable if certain clubs—including Real Madrid and Liverpool—express formal interest.
Interest Intensifies Around Schlotterbeck
Sources reveal that Mourinho holds a particular admiration for Schlotterbeck’s abilities. The defender, who is expected to feature for Germany in the upcoming World Cup under coach Julian Nagelsmann, has reportedly conveyed to those close to him that joining Real Madrid has long been an appealing prospect.
Schlotterbeck’s candidacy joins a list of defensive options for Real Madrid, alongside players such as Josko Gvardiol and Riccardo Calafiori, as the club seeks to reinforce its backline following the confirmed signing of Konaté.
