As Spain prepares to face Belgium in the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup, a notable feature remains unchanged: the Espagnol national anthem will play without a single voice joining in. This phenomenon is not due to lack of enthusiasm but because the anthem itself contains no official lyrics.

The anthem, widely known as the Marcha Real or the Royal March, holds a unique place among national anthems worldwide. Unlike many other countries whose anthems are sung with pride and words, Spain’s anthem is purely instrumental. This tradition continues to draw curiosity and questions from football fans and observers alike.

The History Behind Spain’s Wordless Anthem

The Royal March traces its origins back to the 18th century and an earlier composition called the ‘Marcha de Granaderos’, or ‘March of the Grenadiers’. This piece first appeared in 1761 within a military march collection for the Espagnol Infantry. Its stirring melody quickly gained popularity among the Espagnol people, eventually earning the title of ‘March of Honor’ by King Charles III in 1770.

Over time, the march became closely associated with the Espagnol monarchy. It was played during ceremonies and public events attended by members of the Royal Family, solidifying its status as the Royal March. The version recognized today was shaped in 1908 when Bartolomé Pérez Casas, the Head Musician of the Royal Corps of Alabarderos Guards, arranged the tune into the anthem known today.

Despite its long-standing history and regal significance, the Marcha Real never acquired official lyrics, making it one of the few national anthems worldwide performed solely as an instrumental piece. This unique characteristic explains why no Espagnol fans or players sing along when the anthem is played during international competitions, including the World Cup.

As the tournament progresses, the silent yet powerful notes of Spain’s anthem continue to resonate as a symbol of national pride and tradition, standing apart in the global arena of football anthems.
