The University of Georgia track and field team claimed its second consecutive NCAA outdoor championship this weekend, amassing a total of 50 points to surpass runner-up Florida. This victory solidifies Georgia’s position as a dominant force in collegiate track and field.
Among the standout performances was freshman sprinter Adaejah Hodge, who shattered two NCAA records during the competition. She first set a new mark in the 200-meter dash, then went on to break Olympian Sha’Carri Richardson’s collegiate record in the 100-meter semifinal, demonstrating extraordinary speed and promise.
Adding to the Bulldogs’ record-breaking efforts, senior Dejanea Oakley established a new NCAA record with her winning run in the 400-meter event, further cementing Georgia’s outstanding showing at the championships.
Coach Caryl Smith-Gilbert’s Leadership
This latest triumph marks the fourth outdoor championship under the guidance of coach Caryl Smith-Gilbert, who also led the team to victory at the indoor NCAA championships earlier this March. Her leadership has been instrumental in sustaining the program’s high level of performance.
Reflecting on the team’s competitive spirit, Smith-Gilbert shared with the University of Georgia’s student newspaper, “I didn’t like getting red ribbons. I only wanted blue. I got just a spirit of fire all the time… I don’t know any other way to do things.” Her relentless pursuit of excellence continues to inspire the Bulldogs as they strive for continued success.
