In 2023, an innovative environmental restoration effort took place in Washington state, where a helicopter delivered 90 small floating islands onto a struggling wetland. This unusual method aimed to revive a damaged ecosystem overwhelmed by invasive plant species.
These floating islands were populated with native plants carefully chosen to reestablish the natural flora without direct competition from the invasive grass that had previously dominated the wetland. By providing these isolated platforms, the restoration team sought to give native vegetation a foothold in an ecosystem on the brink of collapse.
Strategic Intervention to Protect a Vital Wetland
The project was spearheaded by the Tulalip Tribes’ Department of Natural Resources, with ecologist Todd Gray and biologist Michelle Bahnick leading the initiative. Their primary objective was to halt the spread of the non-native grass species that had disrupted the local plant community and threatened the wetland’s long-term viability.
The use of a helicopter was a strategic choice, enabling the delivery of these floating habitats to remote and sensitive areas of the wetland that would have been inaccessible—or further damaged—by traditional heavy machinery. This aerial deployment allowed the team to cover a substantial area efficiently and with minimal ecological disturbance.
Now, three years later in 2026, the Oxbow Pallet Project is entering a critical phase of monitoring. Researchers are closely examining the effectiveness of this novel approach to ecosystem restoration, assessing whether the floating islands are successfully fostering native plant growth and contributing to the wetland’s recovery.
