In an innovative ecological effort launched in 1997, Daniel Janzen and Winnie Hallwachs devised a unique conservation strategy in Costa Rica that yielded remarkable environmental changes. Collaborating with a local juice company, they arranged for the donation of a tract of pristine land to the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, in exchange for the company delivering its orange peel and pulp waste to a nearby deforested pasture at no cost.

Starting in 1998, this plan saw the deposition of roughly 1,000 truckloads, equivalent to over 12,000 metric tons, of orange compost onto the barren site. The area was officially marked with a sign to facilitate ongoing scientific observation of the experiment’s long-term impacts.

Transforming a wasteland into a vibrant forest

Years later, upon revisiting the site with detailed guidance, researcher Treuer discovered a dramatic transformation. What was once a lifeless expanse had blossomed into a lush and diverse ecosystem, starkly contrasting with an adjacent barren area untouched by the orange peel deposits.

“The difference between the two sites was simply the presence of orange peels,” Treuer noted, emphasizing the striking contrast. The once desolate pasture had evolved into a thriving new forest, rich with flora and fauna, illustrating the profound effect of this unconventional composting method on ecosystem restoration.
