In a thrilling finale at San Siro, Inter Milan staged an extraordinary comeback, scoring twice in stoppage time to secure a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina and reclaim their position at the top of Serie A.
The match seemed destined for an upset when Alex Jimenez unleashed a spectacular long-range strike in the 65th minute, giving the visitors an unexpected lead. Fiorentina, battling a difficult run of form, appeared poised to extend their winless streak to four games. However, Inter refused to surrender.
With the clock ticking beyond regulation, Marcus Thuram emerged as the hero for the home side. He first equalized in the 91st minute, capitalizing on relentless pressure, and then earned a decisive penalty in the 98th minute. Piotr Zielinski calmly converted the spot-kick, completing the dramatic turnaround.
Inter’s Late Surge Returns Them to Serie A Summit
Before the late fireworks, the first half belonged to Inter, who controlled possession and created chances but were repeatedly denied by Fiorentina’s goalkeeper, David de Gea. De Gea was particularly impressive, making a fingertip save to deny a header from Pio Esposito and quickly reacting to block an angled shot from Thuram.
Despite these early chances, the visitors stunned the hosts with Jimenez’s audacious strike, catching debutant Inter goalkeeper Ivan Provedel off guard as the ball curled into the top corner from distance.
Reflecting on the comeback, Inter’s coach Cristian Chivu emphasized the team’s resilience: “That’s football: sometimes you concede. The important thing is not to let your heads drop and to maintain the same mentality. Ever since I arrived here, I’ve always said that games last 90 minutes.”
The victory lifts Inter back to the summit of Serie A, level on points with surprise leaders Lazio at 22, while Fiorentina remain rooted near the bottom in 18th place, still seeking to end their troubling run.
