Jamelle Elliott, a longtime figure within the UConn Huskies women’s basketball program, has announced her departure from the coaching staff. The university confirmed that Elliott will be stepping away to explore professional opportunities beyond coaching.

With a tenure spanning over two decades as both a player and assistant coach, Elliott has been an integral part of the Huskies’ success. Her contributions include participation in seven national championship victories, notably the undefeated 1995 season, a hallmark of UConn’s storied history.

Head Coach Geno Auriemma Reacts to Elliott’s Departure

Head coach Geno Auriemma expressed his admiration for Elliott’s dedication and the significant role she played within the program. He acknowledged the challenge of filling the void left by her exit.

“We’ll miss Jamelle tremendously, but I’m grateful for all the time we spent together and all that we accomplished together,” Auriemma stated in an official press release, highlighting the deep appreciation for her commitment.

Reflecting on her decision, Elliott described leaving her alma mater as a difficult yet necessary step at this stage in her life. “This was not an easy decision, but I know it is the right time for me to begin a new chapter,” she remarked. “It was a privilege and honor to wear the Husky uniform and be a part of the coaching staff. UConn will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will always love and support our program and the university.”

Before embarking on her coaching career, Elliott made her mark as a forward, amassing over 1,000 rebounds during her time on the court. Her transition into coaching, particularly in recruiting, was pivotal in sustaining and enhancing the program’s talent pipeline for years.

As UConn begins to adjust to this change in personnel, plans are underway to address the vacancy and continue the program’s legacy of excellence.
