Katie Boulter advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 Japan Open on Wednesday by defeating Viktorija Golubic in straight sets. The eighth-seeded British player needed less than an hour on the WTA hard courts in Osaka to secure the victory, rallying impressively with nine consecutive games after the opening set was tied at 2-2.

Boulter Fights Weather to Advance in Japan

Despite strong winds that disrupted play throughout the match, Boulter maintained her composure and delivered a commanding performance. She won 89% of her first-serve points and fended off the only break point she faced. After falling behind, Golubic was able to claim just a single game in the remainder of the contest. This win marked Boulter’s second straight-sets victory over the Swiss player this year, following a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at the Ostrava Open.

“Staying patient in the wind was one of the biggest things for me,” Boulter said post-match. “I sometimes get frustrated, but I didn’t let it affect me today.”

The implications of this result extend beyond the tournament in Japan, influencing the race for England’s No. 1 female tennis player. Currently ranked 57th, Boulter had fallen behind Sonay Kartal after Kartal’s appearance in the WTA 1000 final in Wuhan earlier this week. Should Boulter continue her strong run to the semifinals here, she would surpass Kartal in the rankings and reclaim the top British position.

Looking ahead, Boulter will face the winner of the match between Antonia Ruzic and Kayla Day in the quarterfinals.
