The start of the third edition of the Champions League under its revamped format, introduced in the 2024/25 season, brings significant changes to how teams are ranked. With the traditional group stage replaced by a single, expanded league phase featuring all 36 clubs in one combined table, new challenges have emerged—most notably, the resolution of ties when teams finish with the same number of points.

This new format does away with the familiar head-to-head system, which previously settled rankings between teams that ended level on points by considering their direct encounters. Since not all teams will face each other during this expanded league phase, relying on head-to-head results is no longer feasible.

Goal difference takes precedence over head-to-head

UEFA has completely overhauled the tiebreaking criteria to adapt to this novel structure. Now, goal difference stands as the foremost determinant when teams share the same point total. This shift means that even if one team has beaten another in a direct matchup, it could still be ranked lower if its overall goal difference is inferior. This represents a fundamental change in the competition’s ranking philosophy.

Given the spread of 36 clubs and a maximum of 24 points available per team, tied point totals are expected to be common, making these new tiebreakers crucial for the standings.

Below is the comprehensive list of the new Champions League tiebreakers, as outlined in Article 18 of the competition regulations, which will govern the ranking of teams in this format.
