Korea Republic launched their World Cup journey with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Czechia, finally capitalizing on numerous scoring opportunities in a match held at a sparsely populated Guadalajara stadium.

The contest remained tightly balanced for much of the game, with the Koreans struggling to convert chances. Despite this, it was the visitors from Europe who struck first. In the 59th minute, Ladislav Krejci broke the deadlock by heading in a long throw-in, catching the Koreans off guard and seizing an unexpected lead.

However, Korea responded swiftly. Demonstrating composure under pressure, Hwang In-Beom skillfully lobbed the ball over the Czech goalkeeper just eight minutes later, leveling the score and reigniting the home side’s hopes.

Late Drama Decides the Match

As the match approached its final stages, Czech midfielder Tomas Soucek appeared to restore his team’s advantage with a header from a free kick in the 77th minute. The goal, however, was disallowed for offside, leaving the game deadlocked.

Just under three minutes later, the breakthrough finally came for Korea. Hwang In-Beom, turning from scorer to creator, set up substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu, who calmly finished from close range to secure the decisive goal. This late strike ensured Korea’s campaign began with a vital victory, overcoming both the scoreboard and their earlier inefficiency in front of goal.
