Roberto De Zerbi, manager of Tottenham Hotspur, has expressed optimism about the impact of Dejan Kulusevski‘s return from injury on the club’s challenging season. The Swedish forward, sidelined since May 2025 due to a knee injury, resumed full training this week, signaling a potential turning point for Spurs.

Although Kulusevski will not be available for the upcoming match against Aston Villa on Saturday, De Zerbi anticipates his comeback shortly after the international break. The 26-year-old’s presence in training has already provided a morale boost to the squad, which has struggled in the early stages of the campaign.

“We have to manage him in the best way we can, with the medical staff, physical staff, but it’s a great thing for us. He’s a good player, he’s a good guy and he deserves to play again,” De Zerbi remarked during a Friday press conference. He emphasized the importance of gradual progress, stating, “We have to work day by day, also for Deki the international break is important because when he will be at the top of condition and pass over the injury, I think it’s a great signing. A new signing for us!”

Injury Comebacks Shaping Tottenham’s Season

Kulusevski‘s situation echoes that of James Maddison, who also faced a long recovery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in August 2025. Maddison surprised many by returning ahead of schedule in May, playing a crucial role in Tottenham’s fight to avoid relegation last season.

This season, Maddison encountered another setback with a shoulder injury sustained during the opening weekend against Brentford. Yet, his recent performance in a League Cup match, despite a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool, showed encouraging signs. The midfielder appeared ready to contribute more significant minutes in the upcoming fixture against Villa.

With both key players on the mend, De Zerbi is hopeful these returns will inject much-needed energy and quality into Tottenham’s lineup as they seek to improve their fortunes this season.
