On Monday, September 7, 2026, the United States will mark Labor Day, a federal holiday that traditionally brings a long weekend filled with family activities, barbecues, and parades. Alongside the celebrations, many Americans look forward to taking advantage of special discounts offered by various retailers and supermarkets. For those planning last-minute shopping, knowing which stores remain open is essential.

While government offices, libraries, banks, and the stock market close in observance of the holiday, retail stores and supermarkets generally operate but with varying hours depending on the location. Notably, most major chains will stay open; however, there is at least one significant exception.

Store Openings and Hours for Labor Day 2026

Walmart has confirmed that its nationwide stores will be open on Labor Day, with most locations maintaining their regular hours, typically from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Shoppers are advised to verify the schedule of their local Walmart, as hours may differ based on the store’s region.

For members of Sam’s Club, stores will welcome Plus members from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., whereas general members can shop between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on the holiday.

Target stores also plan to remain open, generally following their usual hours, which often run from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Customers should check local store hours as they can vary.
