Among those approached were Nicolas Cage, Russell Crowe, and Adrien Brody, none of whom ended up stepping into Middle-earth. Notably, Patrick Stewart, renowned for his roles in ‘Star Trek’ and ‘X-Men,’ was also offered a key part.
Stewart was in the running for the role of Gandalf. However, during a New York Star Trek Convention, he revealed that his decision to reject the part was influenced by his critical view of the script. This opened the door for Ian McKellen to portray the iconic wizard, a choice that would become definitive for the franchise.
The Journey to Casting Gandalf
Interestingly, Ian McKellen himself admitted that he was far from the initial choice for Gandalf. In an interview with Variety, McKellen recounted that both Anthony Hopkins and Sean Connery had declined the role before he was cast. “They’re all coming out of the woodwork now,” McKellen joked, reflecting on how these actors have since spoken about the role.
Director Peter Jackson later provided insight into why McKellen was the ideal choice, suggesting that Connery might not have matched McKellen’s level of commitment and flexibility. Jackson noted the unique dedication McKellen displayed, especially highlighting his willingness to embrace the demands of the role and the production schedule. Jackson also humorously referenced the challenge of balancing filming with Connery’s “tee times,” implying the legendary actor’s lifestyle might have conflicted with the shoot’s rigors.
