The chair of English football’s Independent Regulator, David Kogan, has indicated that the appeal of Manchester City regarding over 100 alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations is expected to be heard by January. This statement comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the club’s compliance with league rules.

Manchester City, currently leading the Premier League with an unblemished record of six wins in six matches, recently secured a 3-0 victory against Liverpool. Despite their on-field success, the club continues to deny the accusations leveled against them.

While no official sanctions have been applied yet, speculation has mounted over potential repercussions. These could include a significant points deduction severe enough to risk relegation, and even the unprecedented possibility of having their Premier League titles from 2009 to 2018 revoked.

Independent Commission to Oversee the Appeal Process

Kogan clarified that the final decision will not rest with the Premier League itself but with an independent commission composed of three retired judges or lawyers. Speaking to Times Radio, he explained that the appeal process is governed by a prescribed 12-week timeline, suggesting a hearing may take place by mid to late January.

“The Premier League have said that they want to get this resolved within the season, and actually, of course, it’s not the Premier League, it’s an independent commission that’s actually going to hear this,” Kogan stated. He emphasized the need for clarity before any judgment can be passed.

Furthermore, Kogan stressed the importance of maintaining the independence of the process, indicating that he would resign if political interference were to affect the investigation or verdict.
