Bernardo Silva is reportedly set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer, signing a two-year contract with an option to extend. This development has triggered Manchester City to initiate plans for a significant reshuffle in their midfield lineup.
City recently faced a setback when their £120 million bid for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson was turned down. Despite the player’s preference for City over rivals Chelsea and Manchester United, the club might reconsider pursuing the deal. Meanwhile, with the arrival of new manager Enzo Maresca, strengthening the right-back position has become a priority.
Transfer Targets and Squad Adjustments
In response, City is reportedly preparing an offer for Atalanta defender Marco Palestra, aiming to bolster their defensive options. However, their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur full-back Pedro Porro appears unlikely, as Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi has declared Porro non-transferable, setting a £50 million valuation that City may find prohibitive.
Interest from Real Madrid in City’s defender Josko Gvardiol has also been noted. City, valuing Gvardiol highly, have responded by offering him a contract extension. Meanwhile, the transition in management from Pep Guardiola to Enzo Maresca could lead to departures for several players, including Gvardiol, Rúben Dias, Marmoush, Reijnders, and Rodri.
On the attacking front, City’s lineup might feature a young, dynamic front three composed of Jeremy Doku, Samuel Semenyo, and Amine Cherki, with Erling Haaland leading the charge. Doku, who registered eight goals and 14 assists during the 2025-26 season, is expected to be a key asset for Belgium at the upcoming World Cup, potentially propelling him into a more prominent role at City next season.
In goalkeeping matters, Newcastle United have initiated contact with City over James Trafford, viewing him as a potential first-choice goalkeeper. Although formal negotiations have yet to begin, Trafford’s future decision is anticipated after the World Cup. With Gianluigi Donnarumma poised to start as City’s primary goalkeeper, Trafford might consider a transfer to secure more playing time.
