Former England captain Gary Lineker has urged Manchester City to accept any sanctions imposed following an independent commission’s findings that the club breached Premier League financial regulations more than 100 times. The violations reportedly involved orchestrated “sham” contracts designed to artificially inflate revenues and reduce costs over a span of nine seasons, from 2009 to 2018.

Despite the severity of the allegations, Manchester City, ten-time English champions, have denied any wrongdoing and announced on Friday their decision to appeal the commission’s ruling. The Premier League has yet to determine the specific penalties, but options on the table include significant points deductions, financial fines, or even expulsion from the league.

Lineker Calls for Accountability

Speaking at Leaders Week London 2026, hosted at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium, Gary Lineker expressed concern over the impact of the case on both the club and the integrity of the league. “Obviously, it looks really bad for Manchester City, and bad for the game, too,” he remarked. He went on to reject conspiracy theories surrounding the Premier League’s handling of the matter, emphasizing that such controversies are the opposite of what the league would want.

Lineker advocated for transparency and responsibility from Manchester City, suggesting that the club should openly acknowledge any mistakes and accept the consequences for the greater good of football. “I’d love to see Man City now just own it and just say, ‘OK, we got it wrong but for the good of the game, we’ll accept it and we’ll accept whatever punishment comes our way and we’ll carry on’,” he stated.
