Manchester United marked their return to the Champions League after a three-season absence with a commanding 4-0 victory over Azerbaijani champions Sabah at Old Trafford. The English giants showcased their superiority as they comfortably outplayed the newcomers to European elite competition on their debut.
The scoring opened in the 27th minute when Matheus Cunha broke the deadlock, setting the tone for the rest of the match. Goals from Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko, and Lisandro Martinez followed, sealing a comprehensive win for United as they took full advantage of a favorable draw to kick off their Champions League campaign.
Despite this impressive European display, Manchester United have struggled in the domestic league, accumulating just four points from their first three Premier League matches against newly promoted Hull City, Ipswich Town, and a trip to Everton. Yet, the gulf in experience and quality between the three-time European champions and the relatively young Azerbaijani club, founded only nine years ago, was evident throughout the evening.
Sabah’s European Dream Meets Reality
Sabah earned their first-ever night at the Theatre of Dreams by navigating through four rounds of Champions League qualifying, a remarkable achievement for the club. Their head coach, Valdas Dambrauskas, returned to Old Trafford with a personal connection, having started his journey toward the Champions League with a role at Manchester United Soccer Schools while juggling multiple part-time jobs.
Before kickoff, Dambrauskas acknowledged the rapid progress his team had made by reaching this stage, conceding that Sabah had accelerated through several stages of development to compete at this level. However, the experience gap was clear as United’s more polished and cohesive performance left Sabah unable to mount a significant challenge.
United manager Michael Carrick expressed satisfaction with his team’s display, praising their attacking play and the clean sheet they secured. “I thought some of our attacking play was fantastic, some of the football we played was really good,” Carrick said, highlighting the positives from an otherwise uneven contest.
