Arc System Works, widely recognized for their expertise in fighting games, have often faced criticism for the lackluster nature of their single-player experiences. However, their upcoming title, Marvel Tôkon: Fighting Souls, promises a fresh direction with the introduction of an “Episode Mode,” which will feature five story arcs centered around the game’s diverse teams. This mode aims to elevate the narrative depth typically missing from fighting games by engaging players through rich storytelling.

At the helm of this ambitious narrative endeavor is Kieron Gillen, a distinguished British writer known for his substantial contributions to the comic book realm in the 21st century. His involvement signals a potential shift in how single-player content is crafted in fighting games, thanks to his seasoned approach to storytelling and character development.

From Journalism to Comic Book Legacy

Gillen, now 50 years old, embarked on his professional journey as a video game journalist. His bylines have appeared in respected publications such as PC Gamer UK, The Escapist, The Guardian, Eurogamer, and Edge. In 2007, he founded the influential gaming website Rock Paper Shotgun, further cementing his impact within the gaming community. Notably, he became the first video game journalist to be honored with the Periodical Publishers Association (PPA) award.

Gillen’s passion for the medium extends beyond journalism; he has openly admired the work of Warren Spector, the visionary behind acclaimed titles like Deus Ex, Thief, and Epic Mickey. This admiration underscores his deep appreciation for narrative-driven games.

Transitioning to comic books in 2003, Gillen initially contributed strips to various outlets before launching his groundbreaking series Phonogram in 2006. The series spanned a decade and earned high praise, including from renowned writer Warren Ellis, who described it as “one of the few essential works of this year.” This milestone marked Gillen’s emergence as a major voice in modern comics, a reputation that continues to inform his current work in video game storytelling.
