Mel Brooks, the iconic filmmaker behind the cult classic Spaceballs, took proactive steps to guarantee his character Yogurt would appear in the upcoming sequel. At the age of 100, Brooks chose to film his scenes early in the production schedule, ensuring his involvement regardless of his availability throughout the entire shoot.

Revealing this behind-the-scenes decision, actress Daphne Zuniga, who returns as Vespa in the sequel, shared details during her appearance at 90s Con last weekend (via People). She explained, “We filmed ‘Spaceballs: The New One’ that Mel Brooks worked with the writers on. He’s a big influence in it. He filmed his part already before we shot. It was his idea: ‘You better film me now because I’m 100.’ So we did.”

Returning Cast and Creative Influence

The original 1987 sci-fi comedy was directed and co-written by Brooks, whose irreverent satire of Star Wars and other science fiction staples secured the film’s enduring popularity. For the sequel, his creative input extended beyond reprising Yogurt, as he collaborated closely with the writing team to shape the new story.

The sequel also marks the return of several familiar cast members. Zuniga reprises her role as Vespa, elevated now to Queen Vespa, while Bill Pullman returns as L Lone Starr. This reunion of the original ensemble alongside Brooks’ continued involvement promises continuity and a nod to the beloved original.
