Naomi Osaka advanced to the second round of the 2026 Bad Homburg Open after overcoming Magdalena Frech in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, on Monday. The match, interrupted by rain on Sunday with Osaka leading 5-4 in the first set, resumed under clear skies, where the four-time Grand Slam champion swiftly closed out the contest in one hour and 34 minutes, dominating the final stages by winning seven of eight games.
Osaka’s victory marks a strong start to her grass-court season, setting up a second-round clash against either Elise Mertens or Alexandra Eala. Notably, Osaka’s best performance on grass remains her semifinal appearance at Nottingham in 2018, where she fell to Ash Barty.
Upset and Advancements at Bad Homburg Open
While Osaka’s progress was expected, the day’s most surprising result came from world No. 25 Clara Tauson, who ended the campaign of seventh seed and defending champion Diana Shnaider. Tauson secured a 6-4, 6-4 victory in one hour and 45 minutes, converting four of ten break points and breaking a seven-match losing streak in the process.
Shnaider, who claimed the title at Bad Homburg in 2024, has struggled this year on grass, falling in the opening round of both her tournaments on the surface. Alongside Osaka and Tauson, Qinwen Zheng and Anna Kalinskaya also advanced to the second round, continuing their campaigns at the event.
