The Netherlands delivered a commanding 5-1 victory over Sweden in their Group F encounter, moving decisively closer to the knockout stages of the World Cup. The match, held in Houston, saw the Dutch dismantle a Swedish side that had entered the game with hopes of securing qualification through a win.

Sweden had started their campaign strongly with a 5-1 triumph against Tunisia, positioning themselves well in the group standings. However, their ambitions were quickly undermined as the Netherlands surged ahead in the opening stages. Within just 17 minutes, Sunderland’s Brian Brobbey had netted twice, establishing a commanding 2-0 lead for the Dutch.

Dominance from the Dutch in the second half

The second half saw the Netherlands extend their advantage further, with Cody Gakpo of Liverpool scoring two goals in the first nine minutes after the break. This offensive burst ensured the Dutch were firmly in control at 4-0, a margin that rendered Sweden’s subsequent goal a mere consolation. Anthony Elanga managed to pull one back for Sweden, but it was insufficient to stem the tide.

As the match drew to a close, Crysencio Summerville added a fifth goal for the Netherlands in the 89th minute, completing the emphatic scoreline and leaving no doubt about the outcome.

With this victory, the Netherlands now hold four points in Group F, following a 2-2 draw against Japan in their opening fixture. Their goal difference of plus four places them in a strong position to advance to the last 32 of the tournament, which features an expanded roster of 48 teams.

Meanwhile, Sweden’s concession of five goals marks a significant event, as it is the first time they have allowed so many in a World Cup match since their 5-2 defeat to Brazil in the 1958 final.
