The Netherlands have secured first place in Group F and advanced to the Round of 32 following a convincing 3-1 win over Tunisia in Kansas City. The Dutch team capitalized on an early Tunisian error to establish a commanding lead that set the tone for the match.
Within the opening minutes, Tunisia’s Ellyes Skhiri inadvertently scored an own goal, turning a cross from Denzel Dumfries into his own net just three minutes into the game. The Dutch quickly doubled their advantage when Brian Brobbey finished powerfully after a headed pass from Virgil van Dijk, who redirected a free-kick from Tijjani Reijnders back across the goal.
Throughout the first half, the Netherlands dominated possession and limited Tunisia’s chances, leaving the visitors unable to recover from their early setbacks.
Tunisia’s brief resurgence and Dutch response
After the break, Tunisia attempted to mount a comeback. Nine minutes into the second half, Hazem Mastouri scored with a header from a corner delivered by Hannibal Mejbri, narrowing the scoreline to 2-1 and injecting hope for the Tunisian side.
However, the Netherlands swiftly extinguished those hopes. Shortly past the hour mark, Jan Paul van Hecke restored the two-goal lead by powering a header from another Reijnders set-piece. The ball took a minor deflection before crossing the line, sealing the Dutch victory.
Finishing Group F with seven points, the Netherlands edged out Japan—who settled for a 1-1 draw against Sweden—to claim the top spot. As a result, Ronald Koeman’s squad will face Morocco in the Round of 32 on Monday in Monterrey.
Sweden also advanced to the knockout stage, progressing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
