The Oklahoma Sooners softball program is facing a critical offseason following a rare early exit from the Women’s College World Series (WCWS). For the first time since 2015, the Sooners failed to advance past the Super Regionals, succumbing to Mississippi State in a 6-0 defeat that ended their nine-year streak of WCWS appearances.

This unexpected setback has prompted head coach Patty Gasso to embark on a substantial roster overhaul, utilizing the NCAA transfer portal as a key avenue to reshape the team ahead of the 2027 season.

Key Departures Through the Transfer Portal

Leading the list of departures is All-American outfielder Kasidi Pickering, who entered the transfer portal on June 8th. Pickering’s departure represents a significant loss for Oklahoma, as she finished her three seasons with an impressive .384 batting average and 50 home runs, marking her as the most impactful player to leave an already depleted roster.

In addition to Pickering, freshman pitcher Berkley Zache opted to transfer after posting a solid 2.28 ERA this season. Her sister, sophomore catcher and infielder Riley Zache, also followed suit shortly thereafter, further thinning the Sooners’ depth.

Adding to the turnover, sophomore utility player Tia Milloy declared her intentions to transfer as well, despite having two years of college eligibility remaining. Milloy contributed a .353 batting average during the current season, underscoring the challenge Oklahoma now faces in replenishing its lineup.

With these departures, the Sooners are set to lose several key contributors, forcing Gasso and her staff to aggressively pursue talent through the transfer portal to restore the team’s competitive edge.

As the summer transfer period unfolds, all eyes will be on Oklahoma’s ability to rebuild quickly and return to their familiar position among the nation’s elite softball programs.
