A new third-party application named Asobi: Remote Play has entered public testing on Steam, offering SteamOS and Linux users a novel way to stream PlayStation games. This independent software, developed by Inside Internet, enables owners of devices like the Steam Deck and Steam Machines to access PlayStation’s cloud gaming service without needing to own a PS5.
Despite its name, Asobi: Remote Play is not connected to Sony or Team Asobi. Instead, it functions by linking a user’s PlayStation Network account to Sony’s cloud streaming infrastructure, allowing access to titles available through the PlayStation Plus Premium cloud catalog.
Cloud Gaming Without a Console
Traditional Remote Play requires streaming games from a personal PS4 or PS5 console, but this new application bypasses that necessity. By tapping into the cloud catalog provided by PlayStation Plus Premium, users can stream compatible games directly to their Linux-based devices. However, this service demands an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription since it depends on Sony’s cloud gaming platform.
Currently in its public testing phase, Asobi: Remote Play also offers early access to several planned premium features. Among these are the capabilities to stream games at up to 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second, enhancing the overall experience on supported hardware.
