Christian Pulisic, the standout forward for the United States, downplayed injury worries following his halftime substitution in the team’s emphatic 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their World Cup opener. The AC Milan attacker reassured reporters that his removal was a precautionary measure after sustaining a knock during the first half.
Pulisic, who has emerged as a central figure for the US squad as the nation co-hosts the tournament, was instrumental throughout the opening period. He not only assisted a goal but also played a key role in forcing an own goal from the Paraguayan defense after a deft one-two with Weston McKennie. Despite his impactful performance, the forward was taken off at the break due to discomfort in the back of his left leg.
Precautionary Substitution Amid Injury Concerns
“I just got a bit of a kick in the first half, so I’m really hoping that it’s nothing serious. Taking a little bit of precaution today, but I’m hoping I’ll be fine in the next few days,” Pulisic explained. He specified the affected area as roughly his calf, adding, “I’ve had similar things before. I’m staying positive. I don’t think it’s anything at all.”
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino confirmed that the decision to substitute Pulisic was motivated by caution. He revealed the player had previously suffered a knock during a training session before the match and noted, “When he finished the first half, he could not walk. We’re hopeful the next game he’ll be available.”
The United States are set to continue their World Cup campaign with a match against Australia on Friday, followed by a clash with Turkey the following week. Pulisic’s fitness will be closely monitored as the hosts aim to build on their strong start to the tournament.
